PRP regenerative therapy for knee osteoarthritis
PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) therapy, developed as a treatment method in regenerative medicine, involves extracting blood from the patient and using a specialized purification kit to concentrate the platelet levels in the blood to approximately five times the normal concentration. This concentrated platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is then injected into the joint as a therapy.
The principle of PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) therapy
PRP is prepared by centrifuging the patient's blood. The process takes approximately 20 minutes. The resulting PRP contains a high concentration of platelets, ranging from 10 to 400,000 platelets per 1μL.
When PRP is injected into the knee joint in a sterile condition, the numerous platelets it contains concentrate on the surface of the damaged cartilage. The platelets release a large amount of growth factors. These growth factors work to repair and regenerate the degenerated cartilage tissue. Additionally, the anti-inflammatory properties of the growth factors help alleviate joint pain that was previously experienced.
Treatment method of PRP regenerative therapy
- Consultation with the physician and explanation of the treatment -> Confirming the suitability for osteoarthritis of the knee.
- Signing the consent form after understanding the treatment.
- Blood collection for PRP preparation (approximately 10-20ml).
- Preparation of PRP in the cell processing room within the clinic (approximately 20 minutes).
- Disinfection of the treatment area and local anesthesia.
- Direct injection of the prepared PRP into the knee joint cavity.
- Completion with re-disinfection of the injection site.
- Avoid excessive physical activity on the day of the treatment.
- Start stretching and massage from the following day.
- Depending on the degree of cartilage degeneration, three treatments at 2-week intervals are required.
- Follow-up visits at 1 month and 3 months after completing all treatments for observation of progress.
Safety and precautions
PRP is safe as it is derived from your own blood, reducing the risks of allergies or viral infections. After the treatment, you may experience mild pain or swelling due to the active response of PRP, which typically lasts for 1-2 days. The number of treatment sessions usually ranges from 3, depending on the severity of joint cartilage degeneration.
